Race, Racism and My Community Essay - 1461 Words

Today’s concepts of race are usually done by categorizing different people into different populations, religions or groups. Most of the time, they are broken down by their physical traits like the color of their skin, texture of their hair, or facial features. In This autobiographical research paper the subjects to analyze is the influences of race as it relates to my present community. The paper is a first-person account of the interpretation of human interactions in my community. I will be taking into consideration relations, experiences, and opinions on cultural diversity derived from living most of my life in the community of Malibu Groves as well as the environment of which I am a part and the leaders in my community. Most of the people in my community respect each other and have good connections. My parents taught their children to respect everyone and never judge a person because of race, or cultural backgrounds. Racism was not tolerated in my family. Neighborhood children were friends who shared food, homes, and even transportation. Many in the community attends the same church and have traditional dinners on Sunday. A typical Saturday evening included going to the community school and playing baseball together as well as other typical outdoor activities. Considering the traditions, language, religions, and statistics we find the ethnic makeup of the community as African Americans. I was born in Orlando, Florida, and spent 40 of the 54 years of my life in the same neighborhood. So I can say I know almost all of the residents in this community. Most of the people here are like me, we share similarities in the belief of our religion and cultural heritage as African Americans, and single females. Although my race is African Americans, my ancestors are Indian and Irish, which makes my skin tone, hair texture a bit different. There are many factors that show the differences between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. With the many differences there are also some similarities between the two governing systems. A obvious difference is the time period the Roman Republic and Roman Empire lasted. A obvious similarity is they both occurred in Rome. Rome felt under constant threat, at the beginning of the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was initially ruled by the rich and powerful. This is particularly true when viewing the cross-carpet page introducing Saint Mark's Gospel, as shown on plate 51 of The Lindisfarne Gospels, and comparing that page with the metal-work pieces discovered at the Sutton Hoo ship burial site. In particular, it is in comparing the motifs and designs of the two where the impact is clearly seen. The carpet page has several distinct features, beginning with the pattern which runs throughout most of the page. It is a very complex interwoven pattern of lines in the general shape of a circle. Each individual shape can be divided into three rough sections. The three sections of the individual shape consists of a half-circle design at the "bottom" of the shape, and two smaller quarter circles appearing on the top "corners" of the shape. This curvilinear pattern repeats itself upwards of thirty times throughout the page and each shape is connected appearing as one long pattern. This particular ornament can be easily traced to the metal-work's of Sutton Hoo. This motif of intricate weaving patterns, as found on the carpet page, can be found on many of the pieces discovered on the metal-works of Sutton Hoo. In particular, the curvilinear pattern can be distinctly detected on the enameled circular escutcheon taken from the rim of a hanging bowl at Sutton Hoo, as shown on Place! C in Sutton Hoo Ship Burial: A Handbook. In this escutcheon, the curvilinear pattern is repeated throughout the object and each circular shape is connected to its fellows. In the center of the carpet page there appears a circle with clearly divided cells in squarish step patterns. These geometric patterns are repeated throughout the central circle. This cell pattern motif can be seen to clearly have its roots in the Sutton Hoo collection. In general, the cell motif appears throughout the Sutton Hoo collection and ranges from circular to squarish. However, in particular, this step pattern is quite obviously seen, though of smaller size, in the half of a gold shoulder clasp displayed in plate F of the Sutton Hoo handbook. The shoulder clasp shows geometric shapes with each individual shape consisting of a generally four sided figure. On each side of the figure the step cell pattern can be clearly perceived. Surrounding the circle are four sections where lines in an intricate weaving patterns with no definable shape appear. These lines do not come to any straight edges but continue in a curving pattern throughout the individual section. Embedded within those lines are the heads of a bird with a curved beak. These four sections are incontrovertible evidence that the carpet page's ornament were derived from the tradition of metal-working. To begin with, the weaving pattern with no edges are consistent with the pieces found at Sutton Hoo. Notably, plate E in the Sutton Hoo handbook of the great gold buckle shows this particular ornament. The buckle's patterns come to no definable shape but, exactly like the carpet page, consists of an interweaving curving line pattern. However, it is the bird's head with the curved beak which is the tale-tell sign that the metal-working tradition is the source of this carpet page's ornament. The bird's head is exactly like those bird's heads found at! Sutton Hoo. Take for instance plate 10 in the Sutton Hoo handbook. The metal fittings from a lyre in the middle of this page very clearly show the exact same bird's head as in the carpet page. It is clear that from the curved beak to the round eye with a single dot in it, the bird's heads are frighteningly similar. The comparison is unmistakable. It is clear that the traditions of metal-working found at Sutton Hoo was the most important source of ornamentation for the Lindisfarne Gospels' carpet page. The patterns and motifs are strikingly similar and it is without doubt that the carpet page has firm roots in the metal-working tradition of Sutton Hoo. Even if the cat lives through the process, they will have to kill it to see which organs were affected by the toxic chemicals. If this was an actual human going through this deadly experiment, people would be in shock. Animal testing started numerous years ago to help provide humans with information. The process of animal testing is of great importance to scientists that work in testing for toxicity, in most cosmetics and personal care products that are made every year and are put into the market after being tested on animals. Animals in Product Testing stated, these products have gone through a long and complex testing process that leaves millions of animals mutilated, burned, poisoned and gassed in outmoded and unnecessary tests. From these different experiments, animals are often left with different diseases like Syphilis, Herpes, or AIDS (Animal Rights: Animal Testing). Manufacturers of these different products say that they are performing these tests to assure our safety for these products. They want to make sure that humans are not in any amount of danger (Animals in Product Testing). Some well-known animals that they use for testing are: cats, dogs, mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, sheep, llamas, cattle, owls, deer, monkeys and other primates. These are not, by any means, all of the animals that they use. These are just the most common (Animal Rights: Animal Testing). For example, the Draize Test is used on white albino rabbits (S. , Jeremy). They use white albino rabbits because of their sensitive eyes and also because the formation of their tear ducts stops tears from draining away all of the foreign substance (Animal Rights: Test ). In this process, scientists rub shampoo, soap, toothpaste, oven cleaner, lipstick, or lawn products into their gorgeous, red eyes. From this point, scientists record the damage that they observed. This test can last up to eighteen days with their eyelids held open with a clip. Many of the rabbits end up breaking their necks trying to escape from the horrifying pain. First of all, it is pointless to keep the product in their eyes for that long of a period. There is no way that even a child would have something like that in his/her eye for very long. The second reason this is unnecessary to do to a rabbit is that the eye tissue of a rabbit is completely different from humans. (S. , Jeremy). The 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Test can replace the use of mice and other animals in the testing of medicines and other products for their potential to cause sunlight induced photo-toxicity. So, why dont all companies realize that they dont have to do testing on innocent animals? There are two main reasons why it is so hard for manufacturers to use alternatives: the fright for human safety and the fright of product  assurance. The first company that changed their ways of animal testing was Revlon Cosmetics. In 1979, Revlon gave $750,000 to the Rockefeller University to research different alternatives to test their products. Different organizations such as the John Hopkins Center for the Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), Toiletry and Fragrance Association, the Cosmetic, the International Foundation for Ethical Research, and the Soap and Detergent Association started their own research to develop different alternatives. While this research is going on, the amount of animal testing increases so that they can guarantee consistent results with the new alternatives (Stevens). The final reason why animal testing is so cruel is because innocent animals are being abused without reason. For example, many animals that are used in all of these experiments are animals that have either been stolen or are from different animals shelters. Thoughtful, innovative design was a tremendous difference in the cost of the prison, thinking of space requirements and how many workers would be required to run the facility safely. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  89 million dollars of an 83-acre facility placed on a 385-acre site. Total inmate capacity of almost 1000 prisoners. 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  None that I read about 5.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Well, Rush City is the place for our county fair and it sees a lot more action then one may think. It is right on the freeway which makes an easy commute from almost anywhere around the area, and it also provides a nice, safe working environment that is close to home and pays well. There is not many departments like stores in rush city but it is full of factory buildings and worksites. It is also a good spot for the inmates themselves. They can easily have a job on the outside if they are allowed that option and it is close to the facility. 6.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In rush city there are a lot of farm boys who are tuff enough to be prison guards, I actually know of a guy who grew up with my cousins and I on their farm and he went through a strict training program to be a guard in the visitors section. As far as food is concerned there seems to be a lot of ways food is delivered and made up for the inmates. From the usual lunch lady to sysco. I do not know much about the security system in the facility but it must be state of the art if they dropped 90 million dollars on the place. I think it is a fine place for a prison, I believe the inmates would be safer staying in the fence then actually escaping into that town. 7.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As stated in question 3 the Minnesota legislature gave 83 million to build the facility 8.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A: thank god I now have a job that is close to home, it beats driving 52 miles everyday and the pay is competitive to what I was getting at my city job. I can run home for lunch and I get to see my kids more then I used to.
